Exercise Regimen for Teens

Diet and exercise go hand in hand to help you get a fit body. Here are simple tips that teens should incorporate in their regular exercise regimen.

School Sports – Engagement in a sporting activity serves two purposes. The first is to keep the body in shape; the second is to avoid getting into the habit of snacking while you are sitting idle or watching television. So encourage the teens at home to join the school football, volleyball or basketball team as remaining physically active will also help to enhance self esteem.
  • Strength Training – A teenager must do strength training for half an hour at least thrice a week. Weight machines, resistance bands or free weights can be used for the purpose. Concentrate on exercising the major muscle groups when you do strength training. Sometimes professional help may be necessary.
  • Exercise Alternatives – While these are very useful physical activities, they are sometimes not termed as exercise. Swimming, roller skating, water skiing, fishing, hiking, gardening and bike riding are some such fun activities. Getting your teenage son or daughter enrolled in these classes will not make them feel that they are burdened by the drudgery of exercise.
  • Fitness through Video Games – No, video games don’t always make you a couch potato! Fitness games are available in the market at affordable prices as DVDs. Alternately, you can also buy workout videos and emulate the exercises featured there.
