Makeup Tips from the Perspective of Complexion

Makeup should be applied in such a way that will enhance the natural beauty of your face and accentuate the natural color of your skin tone. It is very important to match makeup with the color of your skin to look your best. Listed below are some tips to keep in mind while you coordinate the color of essential makeup items like eye shadows, lipsticks and foundations with your complexion.

First Step: Identifying Your Skin Tone

For this you can hold a piece of white paper to your face and classify your complexion as dark, yellow, olive, tanned, rosy or fair. A more full-proof process would be to try on first a white shirt and then an off white shirt. If white looks better on you compared to off white, you have a cool skin tone or else you have a warm skin tone. Light shades of makeup look better on you than dark shades and you should also opt for silver as opposed to gold jewelry. There is also a neutral skin tone that looks good in all types of colors.

  • Choosing your foundation – People with warm skin tones must use foundations with a yellow base. Beige, almond and copper shades can also be experimented with. Those with a cool skin tone should use foundations with rose or ivory tints.

  • Choosing the blush color – If you have a cool skin tone, the idea is to enhance the skin color and thus use shades of plum, rose, pink or mauve. Warm skin tones on the other hand can use the bold colors of red, coral or choose to keep it subtle with brown or neutral shades. Unlike the popular notion that blush is not a necessary item in your makeup kit, it is indeed important to accentuate the cheekbones with a bit of blush. All skin tones must opt for light hues in red, except women who have naturally rosy cheeks.

  • Best lipstick colors – Never wear too light or too dark colors on the lips. The luscious red color is only meant to be used for evening parties. Both fair and dark complexioned women can choose to wear maroon and lavender shades of lip color. Use only matte lipsticks during summers. Use only lip glosses in neutral shades. You can go for the glossy look in winters.

Makeup Tips from the Perspective of Season

Most women follow a different makeup routine in every season, because the change of external weather conditions does not support the same bases and colors. Listed below are a few tips to keep in mind while changing your makeup statement with every season of the year.

Summer Makeup Tips

  • Wear sunscreen – Sunscreen is the most essential makeup item during summers. Use different sunscreen lotions for the face and other body parts. SPF 15 or higher must be the composition of the sunscreen used during summers.

  • Avoid using foundation – Foundations generally block pores and thus prevent sweating. Release of sweat from the body is very important during the summers. Opt for a tinted moisturizer instead. This will keep skin hydrated while also covering flaws on the skin surface. If it is not a night out, try to skip using a concealer and translucent powder or compact too.

  • Color is very important – Never wear dark colored makeup during summers. Opt for pink, pastel or coral shades that look soothing to the eye.

Winter Makeup Tips

  • Keep skin moisturized – This is the most important tip to keep in mind for the skin to survive the harsh winter conditions. A moisturizing lotion with a light consistency must be applied as base for the makeup to settle well on the face. No creams are to be used if you want to step out in the winter sun.

  • Color for the eyes – The best shades of shadow for the eyes are smoky black, chocolate and coffee. Glossy eye shadow is also a huge rage for evening parties.

  • Use only silicon based foundations – Only foundations which have silicon content must be applied in winters. Use only liquid or cream foundations and not the powder formulations which lead to dryness of the skin.

Monsoon Makeup Tips

  • Say no to liquid or cream foundations – Do not use foundation as the makeup base during the rainy season. Opt for a powder instead which will cover skin flaws and absorb the excess moisture in the skin.

  • Lipsticks and not lip glosses – Matte lipsticks suit the monsoon style more than lip colors with a glossy finish. If you want to add some drama in your makeup, opt for a neutral shade of sheer gloss.

  • Use water based moisturizer – Water loss from skin due to sweating is very rampant during the monsoons. But you also have to keep moisture away from skin as it is prone to acne the most during rains. Water based moisturizing lotions help to achieve just that.

Makeup Tips from the Perspective of Skin Type

Dry Skin

  • This skin has less sebum and water content. If you want to prevent it from looking flaky and dry, it is advisable to use foundations that have oil or water content. Only liquid foundations must be used by dry skinned people.

  • Only mild soaps and low alcohol based face washes can be used to wash the germ on the face. If possible use medicated soaps containing vitamins A, C and E.

  • The drier the skin is, the thicker the moisturizer must be. Try to use a moisturizing cream as opposed to a lotion and reapply several times during the day for best results.

Oily Skin

  • Use oil free or water based moisturizers and foundations on oily skin.

  • Use transparent powder on the face every time you are applying makeup. Specially concentrate on the T-zone (the forehead, nose and chin area). This helps to absorb excess sebum produced by skin and keeps it free from acne and pimples.

Combination Skin

  • This skin type will show oil accumulation on the T-zone and dry flaky patches on other parts of the face. Use alcohol free purifiers to keep this type of skin free from germs.

  • Use semi matte or sheer foundation to cover the flaws on a combination skin. Tinted moisturizers are also very effective in keeping combination skin smooth and radiant.
